Boat Pose

Hello June!!! This month I will be teaching you all about boat pose, how to do get into the pose, its unique benefits, and practical ways you can apply them to your child’s life. Remember that yoga is great for not just your kids, but for you too!

How to:

Step 1: Sitting on my bottom with my legs bent and hands near my body.

Step 2: Sitting straight up and engaging my core, I lift one leg up slowly until my calf is parallel to the ground. Then I do the same with my other leg.

Step 3: Next I lift my arms up until they are in line with my shoulders

Step 4: I hold this position for as long as I can, until I gradually work my way up to 1 minute.

Step 5: I breath in/out and bring my legs and arms down slowly.

Boat pose is a challenging pose because it requires balance, motor planning, and a lot of core strength. This pose is an amazing core strengthening pose. My hips, thighs, and spine also get strengthened when I work on this pose.

This is a challenging pose. I have found the best way to incorporate anything challenging to children, is by turning it into a playful competition or game! If you have multiple children, they can all play at the same time. If it's only you and your child, then you can join in on the fun! The game is simple: who can hold boat pose the longest? Have whoever is playing sitting down in the step 1 of boat pose. Then say the magic words: ready, set, go! And hold the pose for as long as you/they can. Simple right? Give it a try and let us know how it goes.
